Getting Physiotherapy Referrals From Doctors, Coaches and Gyms

In India, many patients reach a physio because a doctor said so. A physio with a few good referring doctors rarely worries about an empty clinic. Orthopaedic surgeons, physicians, neurologists, gynaecologists, sports coaches, gyms and yoga studios all see people who need physiotherapy. They refer to physios they trust, who make them look good to their own patients.

Start with the doctors you already share patients with

Look at where your current patients come from. Which doctors, hospitals or academies appear again and again? Strengthen those first.

Report back every time

A short report after the first visit (findings and plan) and at discharge (result) is the most powerful thing you can do. Keep it to one page. In Clinidiary, referral letters start from a template with the patient's details filled in.

Make it easy to refer

  • One phone or WhatsApp number and a booking link.
  • Appointments within a day or two for referred patients.
  • A clear list of what you treat best.

Show results

Doctors like numbers: "Knee function improved from 40 to 75 out of 100." See measuring outcomes.

Meet people properly

A short visit to a doctor's clinic, a talk at a sports academy, or a free injury camp for a running group builds trust faster than pamphlets. Be helpful, not pushy.

Refer back

Send patients to good doctors when they need them. Referral works both ways.

Never pay for referrals

Paying commissions for referrals is unethical and harms patients' trust. Build relationships through good care and communication.

Keep it going

Thank referrers, keep them informed and meet them once or twice a year. A clear speciality makes this easier. See finding your niche.
