Taking Leave as a Solo Physio Without Losing Patients

When you are the only physio, a holiday means no income and, you fear, patients going elsewhere. So many solo physios go years without a real break, or only take leave for family functions and come back more tired. Rest is necessary, and with a little planning patients barely notice.

Plan leave early

Decide your leave for the year early, including family weddings and festivals. Two or three longer breaks give more rest than scattered single days.

Block the dates in your diary

Block the dates as soon as you decide, so nobody books them and online booking does not show them. See appointment scheduling.

Tell patients early

Tell patients in the middle of treatment a few weeks before, and adjust their plan: a home program, an extra session before you go, or a video check-in if suitable.

Arrange cover for those who need it

Agree with a trusted physio nearby to see your urgent patients, sharing details only with patient consent. Do the same for them when they travel.

Leave a clear message

Update your WhatsApp auto-reply, Google profile and voicemail: when you are away, when you are back, and how to book for your return.

Fill your return week before you leave

Offer patients their first appointment after your return, keep a waiting list, and send follow-ups the week before you come back. See bringing back patients.

Save for it

Keep aside a little income every week for leave, so the break does not feel like a loss.

Frequently asked questions

How do solo physios take holidays?

Plan early, block the diary, tell patients ahead, arrange cover for urgent cases and fill the return week before leaving.

Will I lose patients if I take leave?

Rarely, if you plan their care and make it easy to book your return.

Should I arrange another physio to cover?

For longer breaks, yes. For a week, good planning is often enough.
